A NEW LONG-TERM VISION FOR TOURISM IN THE AREA
Mediterranean tourism business models and policies lack an integrated and long-term vision for the future of the destination.
There is a disconnection between tourism and wider territorial development embracing local infrastructure development, labour market policies, business support environment, spatial planning and social cohesion policies. As a result, the region fails to attract innovative business in tourism especially during off peak seasons leading to heavily seasonal labour market and putting great pressure on natural resources, local infrastructure and public services.
Starting in November 2019, SMARTMED strategic project will address the key challenges of the Mediterranean region to make it a smart, inclusive and sustainable tourism destination. Common territorial features, a homogeneous destination image and similar socio-economic patterns require joint action and a single approach.
The Ministry of Tourism of Croatia, leading the project, considers that this can only be achieved by building a well-structured cooperation, which empowers different groups and levels of stakeholders. To this end, a permanent collaborative platform will be set up as well as networking events and regional forums.
