Plug it! MED strategies to boost e-mobility solutions!

The European Green Deal, the Climate Target Plan 2030 and the Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy make the decarbonisation of transport a crucial EU priority. 

Many projects have been put in place in order to reduce CO2 emissions, notably in European cities. In this regard, the use of electric vehicles is one of the trends that has continuously grown throughout the recent years since the automotive sector contributes to 14% of CO2 emissions worldwide. Although, there are still considerable gaps among countries depending on their technology standards, their legislation, their car manufacturing infrastructures or their electric suppliers.

The EnerNETMob project, which includes 16 partners from 12 European countries, was thought out with the ambition to create a European e-mobility network to overcome these barriers by 2022. How? by facilitating and encouraging the use of electric vehicles for medium and long-distance journeys. The project promotes sharing mobility and land-sea intermodality using electric transport systems, by implementing interurban and interregional pilot networks of Electric Vehicles Supply Equipment (EVSE) also co-powered by Renewable Energy Sources.

Studying phase 

The studying phase of the project included all the necessary actions to implement the electromobility pilot actions. Based on the analysis of the partners’ local and national frameworks related to electromobility, Sustainable Electro-Mobility Plans (SEMPs) were drafted in order to develop action plans in all territories.

In parallel, an ICT (Information and Communication Technology) platform was developed to operate all charging stations of the partners, in order to collect harmonized data and allow interoperability.

The implementation of these plans will be achieved by developing and testing electromobility pilot actions called Small-Scale Infrastructure Networks. The ambition is to connect all these small-scale networks to achieve an “Interregional Electromobility Network” interconnecting all partners territories.

Pilot sites

Following this first phase, the partners of EnerNETMob are now ready to launch 13 charging infrastructure pilot sites co-powered by renewable energy. One of these sites is due to be installed in May 2021 in France’s Bouches-du-Rhône department by Capenergies, one of the project’s partners. Their aim is to facilitate and encourage electric mobility for last-mile deliveries while contributing to the short circuits of agri-food products, will trial a photovoltaic charging station specifically for logistics.

The device consists of a solar shade, a smart terminal with 2 charging ports and an energy storage system. From this logistics hub located at the gates of Marseilles, deliveries in the city center will be shared and made by electric utility vehicle. The photovoltaic installation should make it possible to cover at least 50% of the annual energy needs of 2 electric urban logistics vehicles charging daily on the site, and of the lighting of a national interest market whose peak activity takes place at night. This experiment is a first step towards the greening of urban logistics fleets to a greater level. 

The issues of urban logistics, local consumption, short circuits, organic farming and photovoltaic potential are the priorities of tomorrow. We want to offer our customers new ways of getting around with innovative, easy and clean transport solutions.

The final goal of this experiment is to exploit new data on the optimisation of charging according to the availability of solar energy and vehicle use. The results will help to identify the most effective electromobility technologies and strategies in terms of their interoperability and replicability in other parts of Europe.  

In Greece, more specifically in the Peloponnese region, the Lead Partner of the EnerNETMob project, has also been engaged in its transition towards electric mobility. 6 electric vehicles have already been financed and 5 others will complete this fleet which will bring to 11 the total number of zero-emission vehicles in the region. The networking of the territory in terms of recharging infrastructures has also started. 4 charging stations, each with 2 charging ports, have been installed in Kalamata, Sparta, Nafplio and Loutraki.

The charging stations have strategically been installed on public car parks which will hopefully encourage local citizens to turn to electric mobility.

Many more pilot sites are yet to grow from the ground up but the seed of electric mobility has been well planted all over Europe, promising many flourishing projects towards zero emissions in the coming years
